On this day, Joan of Arc arrives full clad in armour
to relieve the Siege of Orléans, oblivious to the heretic
fate that will burn her at the stake in two years time.

On this day, Easter Rising comes to an end leaving
parts of central Dublin in ruins and the rebels waiting
to be executed by the British forces.

On this day, the Dachau concentration camp is liberated
after twelve years of operation, while back in Berlin
Adolf and Eva are getting married in a bunker.

On this day, Muhammad Ali, previously known as
Cassius Clay, also known by the nickname The Greatest,
is stripped of his boxing title for draft refusal.

On this day, Cambodia is being invaded.

On this day, LA is on fire in the name of Rodney King.

On this day of April twenty-nine, poet C. P. Cavafy
is born in Alexandria of Egypt and for a moment
he too passes through the exalted World of Poetry.

Up to this day, we wait for the barbarians to come
save us from ourselves.
