Today, we’d like to challenge you to write a poem that is inspired by a piece of music, and that shares its title with that piece of music.
the salt burns and the pool swells but the sheer drop down from the cheek and the prospect of thin air makes you dizzy no you can’t let go vertigo rises and you withdraw in the corner of the eye you suppress that tear of yours you hold so dear let it go that suicidal fish spawned out of love you insist on keeping is about to jump out of the glass; don’t you know that gravity, like love is impossible to resist?
I cry over this. Every time.
Here's my attempt at an "I Am Woman" poem inspired by Helen Reddy's iconic song recognizing E. Jean Carroll’s honor of being named to the TIME100---the 100 Most Influential People of 2024.
I Am Woman,
Undiminished
My womanhood pulsates, epicenter
Of the world's delicious revolutions.
I am lush rainforests glistening,
Undulating fertile valleys awaiting exploration.
I am woman, I am life's generous mother -
Swollen with ripened moons and honeyed prophecies.
My body transcends foremothers' hushes,
E. Jean Carroll's defiant roar courses my veins.
I am succulent xylem and phloem ascending,
A verdant cosmos birthing itself endlessly.
Sweet-scented and uncompromising,
I bloom radiantly, petals unfurling lasciviously.
My nipples are tawny buds of pure awakening,
My sex the ancient grail of all quests' beginnings.
Let phalluses kneel at my swollen altar,
As I rewrite the scriptures in my desire's calligraphies.
I am woman, legendary archetype of hunger,
Shapeshifter siren whose sirens never falter.
My voice is the primordial's molten chorus,
Erotic hymns ripening into ecstatic oneness.
Dans ma culotte, l'univers entire se love -
Time's origins pulsate, its endings climax in me.
I am lush fruition, succulent with nectared secrets.
Worship me, creatures, as I reclaim my fecund throne.
